Specialist Subjects

Peregrines Nursery pupils enjoy a variety of specialist subjects giving them a rich educational experience from the start of their school journey with us. All of our specialist subjects are taught by specialist teachers and they receive at least one lesson per week per subject.

Music

Music lessons at Peregrines Nursery are a colourful and energetic exploration of beat and sound. The girls and boys sing, play tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments and dance to a wide variety of songs, from much loved folk tunes to creative vocal exploration activities. Pupils develop a firm foundation of pitch and beat skills whilst learning introductory vocabulary for pitch, tempo, rhythm and dynamics. The Nursery pupils perform a nativity musical for Christmas and participate in school performances such has the Harvest and graduation celebrations.

Spanish

Our focus in the Nursery is to get the children used to the new sounds of the language using their listening skills. We then encourage them to try making the new sounds themselves using their speaking skills. Our specialist teacher uses a number of repetition games and songs, making the lessons fun and interactive.

Dance

All nursery pupils have weekly dance lessons where they go on journeys to magical lands to practise new dance moves. During these lessons, they learn how to move in time to the beat and of course the difference between ‘good toes’ and ‘naughty toes’!

Ballet is also offered as an extra-curricular club with an experienced dance coach.

PE and Games

At Peregrines Nursery we encourage our pupils to be active from an early age. During break and lunch time they enjoy running, cycling, hula hooping and skipping their way around our spacious outdoor play area. The structured PE and Games lessons are focused on developing pupils’ hand-eye coordination, running and jumping abilities and introducing the idea of playing in teams. The highlight of the nursery pupils’ year is joining the Reception to Year 2 pupils for their Sports Day in the Summer Term for running races, obstacle courses and the sack race.

Cookery

Weekly cookery sessions enable our pupils to learn about safe food hygiene and gain an introduction to food preparation and healthy eating. These sessions also incorporate their knowledge learnt elsewhere at nursery, for example, using maths to weigh out ingredients and reading skills to understand recipes. Our cookery is often influenced by our learning themes or celebrations, such as baking a delicious Gruffalo crumble for World Book Day!
