Physical Education

Physical education is an integral part of every child’s life at Falcons School as they engage in numerous different sports including football, cricket, netball, swimming, hockey, athletics, dance and gymnastics. The character and self-discipline acquired in their Games lessons will stay with the pupils throughout their lives and sport will assist in accepting victory modestly as well as defeat generously.

Early Years

In the Early Years, pupils will take part in two P.E lessons a week. We focus on beginning to learn basic gymnastic skills and pupils will start on their awards badges in the Spring Term. The other lesson will be outside and will include hand-eye coordination games, running races and activities that introduce the pupils to the idea of spacing and teamwork.

Key Stage One

In Key Stage One, pupils continue to have two P.E lessons a week. Year 1’s is a gymnastics lesson where pupils will start to work their way through the British Gymnastics Association’s awards and sequencing. In Year 2, they have half a term of dance and half a term of gymnastics. They will learn different genres of dance. They will work on using different levels, transitioning, timing and collaboration in a team.

In their weekly games lessons, children will begin to look at how playing on a team works, practicing throwing and catching on the move, spacing on the field/pitch and learning about the roles of different positions whether it be on the netball court, hockey or cricket pitch. In Year 2, pupils start to play friendly training games in netball, hockey and cricket against other local schools.

Key Stage Two

In Key Stage Two, pupils have a one hour and 15 minutes extended Games afternoon at Barn Elms Sports Trust. In the Autumn term, pupils play netball, in the Spring term they play Hockey and, in the Summer term, cricket and athletics sessions. Each Games afternoon will be dedicated to developing skills in these sports or attending matches and tournaments against other schools. In addition to the Games afternoon, the pupils still have a P.E lesson once a week onsite where they continue to work through the Gymnastics awards, development and progression in vault and rebound, gymnastic sequencing, dance projects including musical theatre dances and athletics practice in the Summer term.

Swimming

In addition to these PE and Games lessons, pupils from Reception to Year 2 will attend weekly swimming lessons throughout the year. Selected pupils from Years 3-6 will represent the school in local swimming galas.

We are lucky to have a superb outside space in our playgrounds, which has a netball court and allows the pupils to get plenty of fresh air. Other sporting activities take place at Barn Elms Sports Ground.
